After reports suggested Intel canceled the Core Ultra 9 290K Plus, attention now shifts to a different segment. Instead of chasing desktop headlines, Intel appears to be strengthening its position in embedded and edge AI markets.

According to VideoCardz, Congatec has introduced five new computer-on-modules (COMs) built on Intel Core Ultra Series 3, also known as Panther Lake, aimed squarely at industrial and AI-driven deployments.

Intel Core Ultra Series 3 heads to embedded AI

Rather than targeting consumer PCs, these modules focus on edge computing scenarios that require strong on-device AI performance without relying on discrete accelerator cards.

Each module supports up to 16 CPU cores, paired with Xe3 integrated graphics featuring up to 12 Xe cores. They also integrate an NPU5 engine capable of delivering up to 50 TOPS of AI performance.

Congatec states that total platform AI throughput can reach as high as 180 TOPS when combining CPU, GPU, and NPU resources. That level of performance positions Panther Lake as a serious contender for AI inference tasks at the edge.

The inclusion of a full 12 Xe core configuration indicates that these designs rely on higher-end Panther Lake variants, though they exclude the X-Series chips.

Multiple form factors and memory support

Congatec’s lineup includes five embedded board variants that support several memory standards, such as LPDDR5X, DDR5 SO-DIMM, and LPCAMM2.

Form factors span COM Express Type 10, COM Express Compact, COM-HPC Mini, and COM-HPC Client. Board sizes range roughly from 84 × 55 mm up to 95 × 120 mm, covering a broad spectrum of industrial and enterprise deployment needs.

The company has not disclosed pricing or availability. Interested buyers must contact Congatec directly, reinforcing that these products target enterprise and industrial customers rather than retail consumers.

The announcement comes at a time when both Intel and AMD reportedly face server CPU shortages, highlighting ongoing supply constraints in the data center market.

Intel also recently strengthened its TDX security technology in collaboration with Google, signaling continued efforts to enhance confidential computing capabilities alongside its AI push.

While desktop enthusiasts may feel disappointed about canceled high-end SKUs, Panther Lake’s embedded rollout shows that Intel continues to prioritize AI acceleration across multiple segments beyond the traditional PC market.
