The ERROR_MCA_EXCEPTION with error code 784 (0x310) and message A thread is getting dispatched with MCA EXCEPTION because of MCA indicates a hardware-related error, often in the critical components of the system, usually CPU or memory.
To begin with, restart your computer, press Windows + X, and select Event Viewer. Then, head to Windows Logs> System and check for warnings and errors related to this BSoD error. Next, reset the BIOS/UEFI settings if your system is overclocking.
How can I fix the ERROR_MCA_EXCEPTION?
1. Run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool
- Press the Windows key, type windows memory diagnostic, select the first result, and click Open to launch the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool.
- Choose Restart now and check for problems.
Windows will restart and start testing RAM for issues. During the reboot, the tool will run a number of tests, and you can montior the scan progress via a progress bar. This process could take some time, depending on the RAM’s size.
Your PC will restart once the scan is complete, and you should see the test results on the desktop. If they are not on the screen, go to Event Viewer to view the results. To resolve any errors found, reseat the RAM and rerun the scan. If the errors persist, it means you have a faulty RAM and you might need to replace it.
2. Update your BIOS/Firmware
- Visit the device manufacturer’s website (HP, Dell, Asus) on your computer. Here, we are demonstrating the steps using an HP device.
- Choose type of product from the list.
- Click Let HP detect your product and choose the device.
- Select the OS and Version, then click Submit.
- Under All software and drivers, locate and click BIOS-System Firmware.
- Choose the latest version and click Download.
- Once downloaded, double-click the file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the update.
3. Update the device drivers
- Press Windows + R to open the Run console.
- Type devmgmt.msc and click OK to open the Device Manager window.
- From the list of system components, go to each category one by one, expand it, and look for a device driver with a yellow triangle and an exclamation point inside it.
- If found, right-click it and choose Update driver from the context menu.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
Now, Windows will try to update the driver to the latest version. If it is not able to find a suitable version, head to the device manufacturer’s website and get the latest version manually. Alternatively, you can make things easy by getting a reliable third-party driver updater tool. These tools ensure all the device drivers on your computer are up to date.
4. Reinstall Windows (Last resort)
Before following the steps mentioned below, do these things:
- Back up your vital data, including videos, photos, documents, and other files
- Keep your Microsoft account credentials handy
- Get a USB flash drive with 8 GB free space
- Make a list of essential apps, their licenses, and credentials ready
- If using a laptop, connect it to a charger
Step 1: Create an installation media
- Go to the Windows 11 download website on another PC or your affected PC, if it is working.
- Locate Create Windows 11 Installation media and click Download now.
- After downloading, double-click the mediacreation.exe file to run it and click Yes on the UAC prompt.
- Click Accept to agree to the license terms and agreements on the Windows 11 Setup window
- Choose the language, edition, and architecture, and click Next.
- Plug your USB drive and on the Choose which media to use screen, select the USB flash device option and click Next.
- Ensure the flash drive letter you connected appears on the Select a USB flash drive page. If it is not visible, click Refresh drive list, ensure the flash drive is listed, and click Next.
- Wait for the process to complete, click Finish, and safely remove the USB device from the PC.
Step 2: Reinstall Windows
- Plug the USB flash drive into the affected computer, then restart it.
- Your PC will automatically boot to the USB drive; however, if it doesn’t, you might have to change the boot order from the boot menu.
- Once the PC boots via USB drive, you get the Install Windows page.
- Choose your language, time, and keyboard preferences and click Next.
- Click Install Windows to start the process.
During reinstallation, your PC may restart several times, and once it is complete, Windows will boot up and take you to the login screen. You can log in to your user account, check for Windows Updates, and configure your device according to your preferences.
In case your device still boots to the USB drive after installing Windows, reverse engineer the steps you followed to change the boot order.
Reinstalling Windows can also help you resolve other BSoD errors like ERROR_INTERMIXED_KERNEL_EA_OPERATION 324 (0x144), ERROR_BAD_STACK and ERROR_INVALID_HW_PROFILE.
If even after reinstalling Windows you encounter ERROR_MCA_EXCEPTION, you can use Stress test tools like Prime95 or AIDA64 to stress-test your CPU and memory. If the system crashes or shows more errors under stress, then the hardware is to blame. You might have to call a technician to get the device fixed.
