Everything Microsoft Added to Excel in September 2026

Microsoft added several major features to Excel in September, including support for multiple values in a single cell, new array functions, interface improvements, and a Copilot editing experience on iPad.

The company has now recapped the September Excel additions, highlighting changes rolling out across Windows, Mac, and iPad.

Excel cells can now hold multiple values and arrays

One of the biggest additions is support for multiple values inside a single Excel cell.

Excel for Windows and Mac Insiders can now store arrays and nested arrays directly inside individual cells. This expands what users can do with structured data without spreading values across several cells.

Microsoft also introduced four new functions designed to work with arrays: FLATTEN, HASANY, HASALL, and HAS.

FLATTEN converts nested arrays into a single array, while the HAS functions help users determine whether an array contains specific values.

Another smaller but useful improvement lets users name a table while creating it through the Insert menu. This can make workbooks easier to organize and helps give tables clearer semantic meaning from the moment users create them.

Microsoft makes Center Across Selection easier to find

Microsoft also made an interface change for users who want to center text without merging cells.

Center Across Selection now appears directly in the Merge & Center drop-down menu, making the option easier to discover and use.

The feature provides an alternative to merging cells while still allowing content to appear centered across a selected range.

Excel for iPad gets Copilot-powered editing

Excel for iPad received a more substantial AI upgrade.

Microsoft added a Copilot-powered editing experience that allows users to modify data, create visualizations, and generate insights through natural-language prompts.

Unlike several of the Windows and Mac improvements, which remain available to Insiders, the new Copilot experience on iPad is generally available.

Microsoft continues to expand Excel rapidly, although recent updates have not always arrived without problems. The company recently fixed an issue after an update broke Excel copy and paste.

Excel could also gain another AI integration in the future, as Microsoft is bringing Grok into Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
