4. SecretFolder

We presented you the best paid option, so it’s time to talk about arguably the best free software for locking your files in Windows 10. In our opinion, the best free ‘encrypter’ you can find is SecretFolder.

Of course, this program has less features than its paid counterparts, but still gets the job done very well.

Some users might find the simplicity of SecretFolder’s user interface not so appealing, but it makes this tool quite easy to use, which is a huge plus, on the other side.

To lock up a folder with this tool, you just need to add it to the list, and that’s that. Very simple, easy and straightforward.

But one of the best features of SecretFolder is the so-called “Protected Uninstall“. This feature requires you to enter a password before uninstalling SecretFolder. That way, your files stay safe even if someone tries to uninstall SecretFolder, which is a very nice touch.

So, if you just need a simple tool to lock a few folders, without performing complex actions, you can’t go wrong with SecretFolder.

5. 7 ZIP

This is a freeware file archiver and, at this point, you might ask: what does it have to do with file or folder locking feature? Well, this Archiver allow you to lock your files or folders with a password after archiving.

It is not a full-dedicated locking tool, but it can do the job for small files and documents.

7 ZIP offers a strong AES-256 bit encryption which is known as the best method to secure files and folders. More than that, it offers ZipCrypto encryption and 7zip encryption methods, so your files and folders will be hard to unlock.

6. Secret Disk

Secret Disk serves as a virtual hard drive where you can put your files and folders, and protect them with a password or make them invisible. It looks like a regular hard drive and even can have its own drive latter, but only you will be able to access it.

Secret Disk comes as a free software, but also have a Pro version, with more powerful features, of course. So, depending on your needs, you can choose between the two variants.

If you choose the free version, you can create one virtual drive with up to 3GB of space, where you can store absolutely any file or folder you want.

With the paid version, you can create as many virtual drives as you want, with unlimited space – your actual hard drive’s space sets the limit. However, just like many other ‘encryption’ tools, Secret Disk doesn’t actually perform the ‘true encryption’ but only forbids access to other users.

It also provides additional security in case of power outage or any fatal error, by automatically making all your disks invisible.

7. Lock-A-Folder

Just like the majority of encryption tools, Lock-A-Folder allows you to set up a master password, and lock or make invisible all the selected folders.

So, if you don’t like SecretFolder for some reason, but you’re looking for a similar software, you might try Lock-A-Folder.

Lock-A-Folder also requires entering a password to uninstall it, so you don’t have to worry about that security aspect. Unfortunately the developer has decided to stop working on Lock-A-Folder, so there won’t be any updates for this program in the future.

Because of that, Lock-A-Folder is still an exceptional option to consider, but it will probably become incompatible with some of the future versions of Windows 10.

8. dCrypt X (UWP)

We can’t talk about the best Windows 10 apps of any kind without at least one UWP app. Unfortunately, the choice of encryption apps in the Microsoft Store is not so rich, with only a few options available. And among those apps, dCrypt X arises as the best choice.

Unfortunately, dCrypt X is not a free app, as it comes at a price of $7.99, which is pretty high for a UWP app. But if you’re willing to pay for this app, you can’t find a better option in the store, right now. dCrypt X can password protect any file on your computer.

It uses the SnowFrost Engine cryptography to encrypt and protect users‘ privacy and classified information. Additionally, you can choose which users can access encrypted files, which is something you can’t find in every encrypting tool.

9. Windows 10’s Encrypting System

For those who don’t want to pay for an encryption software, or use any software at all, Windows 10 got you covered. Microsoft’s operating system itself is a great tool and offers a handful of useful features, including its own file encryption system.

So, if you’re a fan of first-party solutions, you already have everything you need to keep your files and folders safe.

There are a couple of ways to encrypt files and folders in Windows 10, all depending on your version of the system.

For Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise, the process is pretty straightforward, all you need to do is to enable a few options, and set up a password. But Windows 10 Home users would need to do some extra work.

Let’s start with Windows 10 Pro. In this version of the system, all you have to do is to enable file/folder encryption and set up a password. We already have an article about this method, so if you’re interested, go and check it out.

Most Windows 10 users have no idea how to edit the Group Policy. Learn how you can do it by reading this simple article.

For Windows 10 Enterprise, the method of setting up a password is the same as in Windows 10 Pro, but you also have one extra option. You can completely lock any app using the Group Policy Editor.

To find out how to lock any app or program in Windows 10 Enterprise, check out the first method from this article.

And finally, Windows 10 Home users have the hardest job of protecting their files. They need to create a special command in the Command Prompt and use it to encrypt a file.

You don’t have the Group Policy Editor? Get it right now in just a couple of easy steps.

So, if you’re using Windows 10 Home, and want to password-protect some of your stuff, follow these steps:

  1. Open Notepad
  2. Paste the following text:
  • cls@ECHO OFFtitle Folder Lockerif EXIST “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}” goto UNLOCKif NOT EXIST Locker goto MDLOCKER:CONFIRMecho Are you sure u want to Lock the folder(Y/N)
  • set/p “cho=>”
  • if %cho%==Y goto LOCK
  • if %cho%==y goto LOCK
  • if %cho%==n goto END
  • if %cho%==N goto END
  • echo Invalid choice.
  • goto CONFIRM
  • :LOCK
  • ren Locker “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}”
  • attrib +h +s “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}”
  • echo Folder locked
  • goto End
  • echo Enter password to Unlock folder
  • set/p “pass=>”
  • if NOT %pass%==Your-Password-Here goto FAIL
  • attrib -h -s “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}”
  • ren “Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}” Locker
  • echo Folder Unlocked successfully
  • goto End
  • :FAIL
  • echo Invalid password
  • goto end
  • md Locker
  • echo Locker created successfully
  • goto End
  • :Endencrypt folders windows 10
  1. Now, find Your-Password-Here“, and replace it with your actual passwordencrypt folders windows 10 2
  2. Go to File > Save As > Choose All Files, and name your document as FileLocker.batencrypt folders windows 10 3
  3. Save FileLocker in a folder you want to hide
  4. Now, just open the FileLocker command. It will just flash on the screen, and disappear. But you’ll notice a ‘File Locker’ folder created next to it.
  5. Now, just move all the files and folders you want to hide in that File Locker folderlock-a-folder lock windows 10 4
  6. Run the FileLocker command once again
  7. You’ll get the message “Are you sure you want to lock this folder? (Y/N)“.
    • Just type Y, and press Enter
  8. The FileLocker folder, with all your stored files will disappear, and nobody will be able to access it without a password
  9. Once you need to access the hidden folder, open the FileLocker script once again, and enter the password.
    • Once you do that, the FileLocker folder will appearlock-a-folder lock windows 10 5
  10. Repeat the process if you want to lock the folder again.

Unfortunately, this is the only way to lock your files and folders in Windows 10 Home.

Because this process can be complicated, or time-consuming, we actually recommend one of the programs/apps mentioned above, as a third-party tool will save you a lot of time and effort.
