Microsoft is facing growing criticism from Microsoft 365 subscribers after announcing plans to reduce OneDrive storage from 6TB to 2TB for Family and Premium plans.

The change cuts the maximum combined storage capacity by 66.7%, prompting some users to consider cancelling their subscriptions or switching to competing cloud storage services.

Microsoft argues that the new shared storage model offers greater flexibility by allowing family members to use more storage individually. However, many subscribers see the reduction as a significant loss of value.

Reddit users urge subscribers to disable automatic renewal

A Reddit post is encouraging Microsoft 365 subscribers to turn off automatic renewal in protest against the storage cuts.

The proposed approach involves signing into a Microsoft account, disabling recurring billing, and selecting the storage reduction as the reason for cancellation when Microsoft requests feedback.

The goal is to make customer dissatisfaction visible in Microsoft’s subscription renewal forecasts before the new limits reach existing subscribers.

Several Reddit users say they have already disabled automatic renewal, while others are considering cancelling their subscriptions or moving to alternative services.

Existing subscribers have until May 2027

Microsoft began applying the new 2TB shared storage model to new and repurchased Microsoft 365 subscriptions on October 8, 2026.

Existing Family and Premium subscribers will transition to the shared storage model after their first renewal on or after May 2, 2027.

This gives current subscribers several months to evaluate their options before the reduced storage limits take effect.

It remains unclear whether the backlash and potential subscription cancellations will convince Microsoft to reconsider its decision.

The storage reduction isn’t the only recent subscription change. Microsoft 365 Family and Premium users can now share Copilot AI benefits with family members. In other Microsoft news, Microsoft Edge 157 will retire legacy WAM sign-in on Windows next month.
