Google is rolling out a new Gemini-powered feature for Google Sheets that aims to make troubleshooting spreadsheet formulas much easier. The update allows users to diagnose and fix formula errors with a single click, reducing the need to manually inspect complex calculations and formulas.

How Gemini Fixes Formula Errors in Google Sheets

The new capability integrates Gemini directly into Google Sheets. When a formula generates an error, users can hover over the affected cell and select a new “Fix” option. This action opens the Gemini side panel, where Google’s AI assistant analyzes the spreadsheet and attempts to identify the root cause of the issue.

According to Google, Gemini can handle a wide range of formula-related problems, from simple arithmetic mistakes to more advanced calculation errors involving multiple functions and data references. After reviewing the spreadsheet’s structure and data relationships, Gemini suggests and applies corrections automatically.

Users remain in control of the process. If they decide not to continue troubleshooting, they can stop Gemini’s analysis at any time through the side panel before any changes are applied.

The feature is currently available only for organizations that have Gemini for Workspace enabled in Google Sheets. In addition, individual users must have Workspace smart features turned on to access the AI-powered troubleshooting experience.

Part of Google’s Broader Gemini Expansion

The Google Sheets update is the latest example of Google expanding Gemini across its productivity and consumer products. The company has been steadily integrating Gemini into Workspace applications, including Docs, Gmail, Slides, and Sheets, as it competes with Microsoft’s growing AI ecosystem.

Outside of Workspace, Google is also testing new Gemini integrations in Chrome. Recent reports indicate that Chrome may soon offer an “Ask Gemini” shortcut that allows users to quickly get AI-generated answers while browsing the web.

Competition in the AI productivity space continues to intensify. Microsoft recently expanded Copilot in Excel with personalized rules support, allowing users to create custom instructions that influence how the AI assistant responds to spreadsheet-related tasks.

As AI assistants become more deeply integrated into workplace software, features such as automated formula repair could help reduce common spreadsheet errors and improve productivity for both casual users and advanced spreadsheet professionals.
