Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, and attention is already turning to how many copies Rockstar’s next blockbuster could sell during its release window.

Forecast Points to 46 Million Copies Sold

According to a new forecast from investment bank Piper Sandler, GTA 6 could sell more than 45 million copies at launch. The estimate, highlighted by Wccftech, is based on an analysis of community activity surrounding the game.

Piper Sandler examined traffic data from the GTA 6 subreddit and compared it with visitor trends from previous major game launches. The firm found what it describes as a strong historical relationship between subreddit engagement and launch sales.

One model assumes the r/GTA6 subreddit reaches roughly 1.3 million weekly visitors around launch and applies a 35x sales multiplier. A second model uses the subreddit’s current estimated traffic of about 870,000 weekly visitors and applies a 53x median multiplier. Both approaches produce a similar result of approximately 46 million copies sold.

The firm considers its traffic-growth assumptions conservative. Growing from around 900,000 weekly visitors to 1.3 million would represent an increase of roughly 49%, a figure Piper Sandler believes is achievable given the game’s popularity.

According to the analysis, subreddit traffic showed a 94% correlation with launch sales in launch-period data and a 73% correlation when measured five months before release. The research covered 18 AAA game launches from the past eight years.

A Record-Breaking Launch?

Even with GTA 6’s unprecedented hype, the forecast remains extremely ambitious.

For comparison, Grand Theft Auto V sold 11.21 million copies on its first day in 2013. GTA 6 benefits from more than a decade of anticipation, the continued success of GTA Online, and a significantly larger global audience than Rockstar had during GTA 5’s release.

At the same time, several factors could limit sales. GTA 6 is launching exclusively on current-generation consoles, meaning its day-one audience may be smaller than the broader install base available when GTA 5 launched. Higher console prices may also discourage some players from upgrading in time for release.

If GTA 6 were to sell 46 million copies at a standard $70 price point, the game would generate roughly $3.22 billion in gross revenue before additional spending from microtransactions, premium editions, or future PC sales.

Such a result would likely make GTA 6 the largest entertainment launch in history, surpassing records set by previous games, films, and other major media releases.

In related news, Take-Two Interactive has reportedly used AI-generated content in some of its game advertisements. The reports have sparked discussion among players as the publisher prepares for what is expected to be the biggest game launch of the decade.
