Meta is giving Instagram parents a bigger role when AI detects a teen may be struggling. The company has announced a major expansion of its safety system that can now notify supervising parents if conversations with Meta AI suggest a teen could be at risk of suicide or self-harm.

Meta AI can now notify parents about concerning teen chats

The new feature builds on Meta’s existing parental supervision tools for Instagram. If Meta AI detects language indicating a teen may be considering suicide or self-harm, the company will now send an alert directly to supervising parents, along with expert-backed guidance on how to approach the conversation and support their child.

Meta says the detection system was developed with input from mental health professionals, parents, and youth experts. Rather than relying solely on automation, every conversation flagged by AI will first be manually reviewed before a notification is sent. The company says it will err on the side of caution whenever a teen’s intent is unclear.

The feature is available now for Instagram parental supervision users in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, with a worldwide rollout planned before the end of 2026.

The company also revealed another significant safety measure currently in development. Meta is building technology that could notify emergency services if a conversation with Meta AI suggests someone, whether an adult or a teen, is facing an imminent risk of suicide. According to Meta, the move expands on its existing suicide intervention system across Facebook and Instagram, where it made more than 19,000 emergency referrals globally last year.

Meta says it also worked with more than 75 mental health clinicians to review hundreds of AI conversations involving suicide and self-harm. Their feedback is being used to make Meta AI respond with greater empathy, acknowledge a teen’s emotions more effectively, and encourage them to seek help without abruptly ending the conversation.

Stricter Meta AI chats are also coming for teens

Alongside the new alerts, Meta is extending Instagram’s Limited Content setting to Meta AI conversations. Parents who enable the stricter setting for their teen’s Instagram account will also limit the kinds of prompts Meta AI can respond to.

Under this mode, Meta AI will refuse a broader range of sensitive requests, further restricting conversations involving topics deemed inappropriate for teenagers. The company says the goal is to provide age-appropriate AI experiences while giving parents more visibility when serious mental health concerns arise.
