Meta Partners With Broadcom to Build Custom AI Chips for Next-Gen Infrastructure

Recently, we saw Meta exploring AI-powered versions of Mark Zuckerberg, and now the company is moving deeper into hardware. Meta has partnered with Broadcom to develop its next-generation Meta Training and Inference Accelerator, also known as MTIA chips.

The partnership focuses on building custom silicon that can power AI across Meta’s platforms and services. This approach allows the company to strengthen its long-term infrastructure while supporting AI delivery at a global scale.

Four new MTIA chip generations planned

Meta is planning an aggressive roadmap that includes four new generations of MTIA chips within the next two years. The collaboration with Broadcom is expected to speed up both development and deployment.

These chips will handle both training and inference tasks, which are essential for running large-scale AI systems efficiently. Meta aims to support billions of users, which requires significant improvements in compute performance and scalability.

Broadcom takes a central role in development

Broadcom will contribute across multiple areas, including chip design, advanced packaging, and networking infrastructure. The work builds on Broadcom’s XPU platform and its expertise in high-performance Ethernet technologies.

This setup will enable high-bandwidth communication between large AI clusters, forming the backbone of what Meta describes as a massive computing foundation for future AI workloads.

Zuckerberg outlines long-term AI vision

According to Mark Zuckerberg, the company plans to deploy more than one gigawatt of custom silicon initially, with expansion to multiple gigawatts over time. The broader goal centers on delivering what he calls “personal superintelligence” to users worldwide.

At the same time, Hock Tan will step down from Meta’s board and move into an advisory role. He will continue to guide the company’s custom silicon roadmap as the partnership evolves.

Wider changes inside Meta continue

The announcement comes amid broader shifts within Meta. The company has reportedly laid off hundreds of employees across several divisions as part of ongoing restructuring.

In parallel, Meta is testing new features and services, including a rumored Instagram Plus offering. These developments suggest the company is balancing cost adjustments with continued investment in AI and new product experiences.
