Meta signs deal with Reliance to set up its first major AI data center in India
The new facility will be located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, where Reliance is building what it describes as one of the world’s largest data center campuses. As part of the agreement, Meta will lease 168MW of capacity during the first phase, with room to scale further as demand grows.
The announcement comes as Meta continues investing heavily in the infrastructure needed to support its growing AI ambitions. From advanced AI models to future consumer products, the company has been racing to secure more computing capacity around the world.
Meta says the Jamnagar facility will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater. The company will also cover the full cost of the energy and water required to operate the site.
“We’re proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data center in India,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India’s economy.”
The project also builds on an existing relationship between the two companies. Back in 2020, Meta invested $5.7 billion into Jio Platforms, helping expand digital connectivity and online commerce across India.
Clean energy plays a major role
Alongside the data center announcement, Meta revealed new renewable energy agreements totaling nearly 1GW across India. The company has signed deals with CleanMax for 837MW of new solar and wind projects across Rajasthan and Karnataka. Another agreement with Fourth Partner Energy adds 88MW of renewable capacity spanning Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.
Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani called the partnership “a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure” and said the project highlights India’s growing role in the global AI race.
