Earlier this year, Microsoft rolled out anonymous file sharing for iPhone and iPad. Now, the company is rolling out the same feature to Android. Microsoft 365 Insiders using Word, Excel, or PowerPoint on Android can now share files from their personal accounts without requiring recipients to sign in.

The update, announced via a Tech Community blog post, makes it easier to send view-only documents to others. No one requires a Microsoft account to open them.

Anyone with the link can view your file in the Microsoft 365 mobile apps, given that you’re using a personal Microsoft account and select the right link setting. If the recipient wants to edit or comment, they’ll still need to sign in.

How anonymous file sharing works on Android

Once you’re signed in with your personal Microsoft account:

  • Open the file in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint
  • Tap Share > Link settings
  • Choose Anyone with the link who can view or edit
  • Tap Apply, then either send the link or copy it to share manually

Once sent, recipients can open the file in the app—even if they’re not signed in.

The anonymous file sharing feature on Android is available for users running Version 16.0.18827.20066 or newer of the Microsoft 365 apps. It’s worth noting that if those using an enterprise account still require recipients to sign in to access the file.

For users in China, file sharing on Microsoft’s mobile apps is subject to local privacy laws, including the Personal Information Protection Law.
