Microsoft 365 Is Changing Its Web Domain, and Admins Need to Act

Microsoft is moving Microsoft 365 on the web to a new Copilot-branded domain, requiring organizations to make sure their networks allow access before the transition reaches everyone.

A few days ago, Microsoft confirmed that Teams is also changing its domain. Now, Microsoft 365 is following a similar path.

According to MC1462915, users who visit m365.cloud.microsoft are being redirected to copilot.cloud.microsoft.

The redirect started rolling out earlier this month for organizations where the new domain is already accessible.

IT admins need to allow copilot.cloud.microsoft

Microsoft is asking IT administrators to review their network configurations and confirm that copilot.cloud.microsoft isn’t blocked.

Admins should check proxies, firewalls, network gateways, and other systems that might restrict access to the new address.

Microsoft also provides a Connectivity Test tool that organizations can use to confirm whether the domain is accessible from their environment.

Organizations currently blocking copilot.cloud.microsoft won’t avoid the change permanently. Microsoft says these organizations will be redirected later in October.

Blocking the domain could disrupt Microsoft 365

Organizations that continue blocking the new domain after the transition could run into access problems.

Users may lose access to Microsoft 365 and Copilot experiences on the web if their network can’t reach copilot.cloud.microsoft.

Some companies may currently block the Copilot domain because they don’t want employees signing in with personal Microsoft accounts.

Microsoft recommends using TenantRestrictions instead of blocking copilot.cloud.microsoft entirely.

TenantRestrictions can prevent authentication with personal Microsoft accounts while still allowing employees to access Microsoft 365 and Copilot services through the web.

Microsoft hasn’t explained the reason for the change

Microsoft hasn’t provided a detailed explanation for why it is redirecting m365.cloud.microsoft to copilot.cloud.microsoft.

The change follows other domain transitions across Microsoft’s services and places the Microsoft 365 web experience under a domain directly associated with Copilot.

In other news, data recovery will get much simpler for Teams admins. Microsoft is also preparing changes under which Teams could block certain features until users verify their age.
