Microsoft Adds OneDrive Photos Uninstall Option After Backlash

Microsoft is preparing new controls for OneDrive Photos after Windows 11 administrators criticized the feature for appearing on managed devices without an explicit request from IT teams.

The issue emerged after admins noticed OneDrive Photos appearing on managed devices. Microsoft has now listed two new OneDrive Photos controls on the Microsoft 365 roadmap.

Administrators will get more control over OneDrive Photos

Roadmap feature ID 568931, called “Manage access to the OneDrive Photos Desktop experience,” will give administrators more control over personal Microsoft account access.

Admins will be able to manage whether users can sign in with personal Microsoft accounts through the OneDrive Photos experience on Windows.

The new control should help organizations enforce existing access, data governance, and device management policies.

Microsoft currently lists the feature as in development, with rollout expected to begin in August 2026.

Microsoft is adding a dedicated uninstall option

Microsoft is also developing roadmap feature ID 568934, called “Uninstall OneDrive Photos without affecting file sync.”

The option will allow users and organizations to remove the OneDrive Photos experience separately without uninstalling the main OneDrive application.

Removing OneDrive Photos will not affect OneDrive itself or files already synced through the service.

Microsoft says the change will give users more control when they do not want to use the Photos experience. The company plans to start rolling it out in September 2026.

Microsoft has not confirmed that the new controls directly respond to the recent backlash, but the timing suggests the company moved quickly to address user and administrator concerns.

In other news, Outlook Mobile is getting OneDrive support for signature images, while New Outlook is getting Microsoft Planner support.
