Microsoft is getting ready to sunset the MSN Sports app. Come July 20, the app will no longer be supported on Windows 10, according to a new in-app message that is triggered by a recent app update.
According to the message, after July 20, MSN Sports will no longer be accessible for download. Microsoft didn’t provide reasoning as to why, and instead lets MSN Sports users know about their appreciation for using the app with a note saying “thanks for spending time with us.”
As a note, we’re seeing the message in app version 4.54.31792.0, which was recently pushed to the Microsoft Store a couple of days ago. This doesn’t appear to impact the iOS or Android versions of the app, however, as we haven’t yet seen the message on those platforms.
Sunsetting the MSN Sports app on Windows could be seen as surprising, but it actually does make a lot of sense. Microsoft now has the News and Interests section in the taskbar in Windows 10, where you can see sports scores and stories, as well as news and weather. Meanwhile, in Windows 11, there are Widgets, where you can add your favorite sports teams to keep up in the action. Removing MSN Sports would be a good way to push users there instead.
Thanks Bruce for the tip!
