Microsoft Tests Watermarking and Protected Clipboard in Edge For Businesses

edge business security features

Microsoft Edge fans already noticed the latest update makes it easier to hide Copilot, but Microsoft has more planned for the browser. This time, the focus shifts to enterprise security and IT management.

As Neowin reports, Microsoft is previewing two new security features designed for IT administrators who manage Microsoft Edge at scale.

New Edge security features target enterprise environments

Microsoft aims to simplify security management while giving organizations stronger control over sensitive data inside the browser. The new tools focus on visibility, prevention, and policy enforcement across managed environments.

Watermarking protection for sensitive browser content

One of the upcoming features introduces watermarking protection. This capability lets admins apply a persistent watermark to sensitive data displayed in Edge, helping prevent accidental sharing or leaks.

Right now, Edge uses a hardcoded watermark string that has a confidentiality warning, the user’s name, and a timestamp. Microsoft plans to add dynamic watermarks later, along with more granular control over how and when watermarks appear.

To test this feature, admins need:

  • Access to the Edge Management Service portal
  • A Microsoft E3 or E5 license
  • Edge version 142 on the Targeted Release channel

Protected Clipboard enforces DLP policies

The second feature in preview is Protected Clipboard. This tool enforces Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies when users copy and paste data between managed and unmanaged cloud apps.

Protected Clipboard focuses on stopping both data exfiltration and unauthorized data ingestion, especially in mixed enterprise environments where users switch between corporate and personal apps.

To use Protected Clipboard, organizations need:

  • The latest version of Edge for Business
  • A Microsoft 365 E3 or E5 license with Purview-managed DLP policies
  • Intune MAM support
  • Access to the Edge Management Service portal

Both features remain in preview, and Microsoft has not shared a timeline for general availability. The company continues to refine requirements and capabilities based on enterprise feedback.

For security-conscious users, this news follows recent fixes for major Edge security issues. In related news, Google Chrome briefly appeared in a Microsoft promo ad by mistake, though Microsoft quickly removed it.
