Microsoft Edge to Soon Change Local IP Detection for Enterprise Proxy Networks

Just yesterday, we reported on expansion of Edge Business with new enterprise security integrations. Now, it seems another notable change is on the way.

Edge will align with Chromium’s networking behavior

Windows Report can confirm that Microsoft Edge will soon change how it detects and reports a device’s local IP address when using Proxy Auto-Config (PAC) scripts. The said change was highlighted in the official Microsoft 365 Roadmap under Feature ID 568787. While everyday users are unlikely to notice the update, it could simplify network management for enterprise environments.

Microsoft has explained that Edge’s default IPv4 and IPv6 probe destinations will now match the default behavior used by Chromium. Speaking of Chromium, we also found out that Google has started testing Chrome download prompt on homepage for Microsoft Edge.

Besides the updated defaults, Microsoft is introducing new administrative controls. IT administrators will be able to override the default probe addresses whenever their organization’s network routing requires different behavior.

The new policies are named PacMyIpAddressIPv4ProbeAddress and PacMyIpAddressIPv6ProbeAddress. These settings give administrators offers option when configuring proxy environments that depend on custom routing rules.

Enterprise administrators gain additional control

The update is primarily designed for organizations managing large numbers of devices through centralized IT policies. Businesses using PAC scripts to automatically configure proxy settings should benefit from the additional customization options.

The said feature is scheduled to rollout sometime in September 2026 for the web version of Microsoft Edge.
