Microsoft has fixed the Windows 11 KB5089549 installation issue that prevented some users from installing May’s Patch Tuesday update on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 systems.

The issue caused update failures during the reboot phase and affected devices with very limited free space on the EFI System Partition (ESP). Users typically saw error code 0x800f0922, followed by the message: “Something didn’t go as planned. Undoing changes.”

Microsoft Releases Simpler Fix for KB5089549

Microsoft says the issue is now resolved through KB5089573, which is a non-security preview update for Windows 11.

After installing KB5089573, users should not need any additional workaround or manual fix. Microsoft confirmed that the update addresses the installation problem directly.

The company also noted that the original failure mostly affected devices with 10MB or less free space available on the EFI System Partition. Since the update could not complete the required boot-related changes, Windows rolled back the installation during reboot.

Error Appeared Around 35% During Installation

Most affected users reported that the update failed around 35–36% during the reboot process.

Windows then displayed the rollback message before undoing the installation attempt. Error code 0x800f0922 appeared in Windows Update history afterward.

Microsoft previously suggested more advanced fixes, including Windows Registry edits and Known Issue Rollback methods. Those workarounds were not ideal for less experienced users because incorrect registry changes can cause additional system problems.

Installing KB5089573 now provides a simpler and safer fix for the issue. However, because KB5089573 is still an optional preview update, some users may choose to wait for the wider public rollout.

Wider Rollout Expected During June Patch Tuesday

Microsoft will likely include the fix in a future cumulative update that becomes generally available during the June 9 Patch Tuesday rollout.

That means users who do not install preview updates manually should still receive the fix automatically in the near future.

In other news, Microsoft has also released a new Windows 11 Beta build and recently confirmed that Windows 12 will not be revealed during Build 2026.
