Microsoft KB5083769 Update Causes Remote Desktop UI Issues on Multi-Monitor Setups

Microsoft rolled out update KB5083769 as part of the April 2026 Patch Tuesday cycle, adding new Remote Desktop (RDP) safeguards. The update specifically targets CVE-2026-26151, aiming to block malicious or spoofed RDP file attacks that could trick users into unsafe connections.

The change strengthens how Windows handles RDP files, reducing the risk of attackers exploiting remote access workflows.

New bug affects Remote Desktop warning window

As Neowin reports, shortly after installation, users began reporting a new issue impacting the Remote Desktop warning dialog. The bug causes visible UI problems, including overlapping text, cut-off buttons, and broken layout elements.

The issue makes the prompt difficult to read and interact with, especially in security-sensitive scenarios where users must confirm connection details.

Multi-monitor scaling triggers the issue

The bug appears under specific display conditions. Systems using multiple monitors with different scaling settings, such as 100% on one display and 125% on another, trigger the UI glitch.

This mismatch causes the Remote Desktop window to render incorrectly, leading to misaligned elements and unusable controls.

Workarounds available for affected users

Users can reduce the impact of the issue by applying a few temporary fixes.

Adjust display scaling so all monitors use the same percentage value through Settings, then Display, then Scale & Layout.

Alternatively, users can rely on keyboard navigation. Press Tab to move between options and Space to confirm selections when buttons are not clickable.

Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and is currently investigating. A permanent fix will likely arrive in a future update, possibly alongside an upcoming performance-focused release.
