Satya Nadella Says the AI Industry Is “Way Too Self-Obsessed,” But What About Microsoft?

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says the AI industry has become “way too self-obsessed” and needs to spend more time proving how the technology actually helps people. Nadella argues that companies should focus on real-world benefits, economic opportunities, and giving users more control instead of treating AI itself as the achievement.

Nadella says AI companies need to earn people’s trust

Nadella also stressed that AI companies need to earn the trust of consumers and local communities.

That includes proving that major AI infrastructure projects, such as data centers, deliver tangible benefits to the people living around them.

In practice, Microsoft has not always found it easy to make that case. Hundreds of people recently protested Microsoft’s Leeds data centers, while the company has also continued with its Slough data center plans despite local opposition.

Those disputes highlight the challenge behind Nadella’s comments. Microsoft wants communities to trust its AI expansion while continuing to increase the infrastructure required to support it.

But data centers are only one part of the broader trust problem surrounding AI.

A recent survey found that 73% of Americans fear AI companies are not doing enough to prevent potentially serious consequences from the technology.

If companies want broader acceptance, they will need to demonstrate more clearly how AI benefits ordinary users.

AI still has a usefulness problem

Nadella’s comments also acknowledge a growing gap between what AI can technically do and how useful those capabilities feel to everyday users.

Microsoft itself appears to recognize some of that fatigue, with the company reportedly moving away from Copilot+ PC branding even as it continues adding AI features across Windows and its hardware lineup.

Some new Surface devices meet Copilot+ PC requirements without using the label, suggesting Microsoft may want to emphasize the hardware rather than AI branding alone.

Microsoft is unlikely to slow its AI push

Nadella wants the industry to shift its focus away from celebrating AI and toward proving that it improves people’s lives and creates meaningful economic value.

That argument, however, is complicated by Microsoft’s own AI strategy.

The company continues pouring resources into AI infrastructure, products, and services while facing resistance from some users and communities affected by that expansion.

AI also remains an important growth engine for Microsoft. The company’s recent earnings reached $90 billion as AI growth accelerated.

That makes a major slowdown in Microsoft’s AI push unlikely, even if the company changes how it markets the technology.

In the same interview, Nadella also explained that he does not blindly trust AI and instead questions its responses before relying on them.
