Microsoft Ranks 5th in Metacritic 2026 Publisher List, Outperforms Sony and Nintendo
Microsoft has secured a strong position in Metacritic’s 2026 publisher rankings, finishing 5th based on its 2025 releases. According to Pure Xbox, the company achieved an average Metascore of 80, outperforming both Sony and Nintendo.
Metacritic’s annual rankings evaluate publishers based on the critical reception of their games, and Microsoft’s cross-platform strategy played a key role in this year’s results.
PS5 Ports Help Microsoft Climb the Rankings
Microsoft ranked ahead of Sony, which landed in 21st place with an average score of 74, and Nintendo, which placed 12th with 77. The top five publishers included Square Enix, Capcom, Gamirror Games, Thunderful, and Microsoft.
A major factor behind Microsoft’s success was its growing focus on bringing Xbox titles to PlayStation. Its highest-rated game of 2025 was the PS5 version of Forza Horizon 5, which achieved an impressive score of 92. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, also released on PS5, followed as the second-highest-rated title.
These cross-platform releases significantly boosted Microsoft’s overall Metascore, showing the impact of expanding beyond the traditional Xbox ecosystem.
Mixed Results Across Microsoft’s Portfolio
Despite strong highlights, not all releases performed equally well. Microsoft’s portfolio includes titles from major subsidiaries such as Bethesda, Activision, and Blizzard, and around 19% of its 2025 releases received mixed or negative reviews.
Among the top-performing Xbox releases, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 stood out as a major success under Activision, while The Outer Worlds 2 emerged as the best-performing title from Xbox Game Studios.
On the other hand, some releases fell short of expectations. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and additional Indiana Jones DLC received weaker reviews, dragging down the overall average.
Cross-Platform Strategy Proves Its Value
Microsoft’s performance highlights the growing importance of cross-platform publishing. By releasing games on PlayStation, the company reached a wider audience and improved its critical reception.
This approach aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy, including efforts to make development easier for upcoming initiatives like Project Helix. Expanding accessibility across platforms appears to benefit both players and overall game quality.
However, the industry may be moving in different directions. While Microsoft embraces cross-platform releases, reports suggest that Sony is scaling back its own efforts in this area.
Microsoft’s strong showing in the rankings comes amid other ongoing changes within the Xbox ecosystem. The company is reportedly rebranding Xbox Full Screen Experience to Xbox Mode, signaling UI and platform updates.
There are also discussions around potential changes to Xbox Game Pass pricing, which could further reshape Microsoft’s gaming strategy moving forward.
Overall, Microsoft’s 5th-place finish reflects a shift in how the company approaches game distribution. Cross-platform releases are no longer just an experiment; they are becoming a core part of Xbox’s long-term strategy.
