Windows 11 GPO

Did you also encounter a weird boot error after installing the May 2025 security update (KB5058405) on your Windows 11 PC? Well, you’re not alone. However, the good news is that Microsoft has just pushed out an emergency update (KB5062170) for Windows 11 23H2 and 22H2, which is here to address the annoying issue.

KB5062170 emergency update aims to fix 0xc0000098 boot error on Windows 11

Last month’s update (KB5058405) broke more than it fixed for some users. Affected systems hit by the bug couldn’t even boot, showing an error message that the PC needed to be repaired.

As it turns out, the issue was caused by a missing or corrupted ACPI.sys file, flagged by error code 0xc0000098. Basically, if your PC threw an error when trying to install KB5058405, the new patch KB5062170 might be what saves the day.

Microsoft officially confirmed the bug recently and is now offering this new cumulative update as a workaround. But don’t expect to find it in Windows Update—it’s only available through the Microsoft Update Catalog. If you were able to install the KB5058405 update without any hiccups, skip the KB5062170.

Fixes, limitations, and how to get it

The KB5062170 update addresses only the ACPI.sys error and bundles all previously released patches into one. That said, there’s still one lingering issue: if you’re using Noto fonts in browsers like Edge or Chrome and your display scaling is at 100%, fonts might not render correctly.

Microsoft suggests bumping scaling to 125% or 150% until it rolls out a fix. All that said, if your PC’s been stuck in a boot loop with that 0xc0000098 message, it’s worth updating it with the KB5062170 emergency update.
