Microsoft has updated its Release Health dashboard to notify about a new issue with its May 2025 updates, including KB5058405 for Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2. These problems come shortly after similar installation failures were reported with KB5058411 for Windows 11 24H2.
KB5058405 install errors tied to ACPI.sys failure
Some users are running into a serious recovery error after attempting to install the update. The error, marked as 0xc0000098, appears in the Windows Recovery Environment and points to a problem with the ACPI.sys file. That’s a core system driver responsible for power management on Windows PCs.
Here’s what the error looks like:
Your PC/Device needs to be repaired
The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.
File: ACPI.sys
Error code: 0xc0000098
The issue seems to stem from a corrupted ACPI.sys file during the update process. This file controls CPU power states (P-states and C-states) and plays a critical role in system stability.
Mostly affecting virtual machines
Microsoft says most regular users shouldn’t be affected. According to the company, this problem shows up mainly in virtual environments, such as:
- Azure Virtual Machines
- Azure Virtual Desktop
- On-premises VMs running on Citrix or Hyper-V
Other issues reported too
While Microsoft has confirmed the ACPI.sys error, other users are seeing different problems. On platforms like Reddit, some have reported 0x8007007e installation errors as well.
Once again, Microsoft’s official troubleshooting steps don’t seem to help. There’s no fix yet. Microsoft says it’s investigating and has listed the issue on the Windows Health Dashboard.
