Microsoft has been constantly upgrading Teams with new features and improvements. In the past few months, we have reported on upcoming changes, including simpler AI meeting controls and new meeting templates and simultaneous screen sharing for two presenters. Now, Teams admins can finally decide whether profane words should remain masked.

Microsoft Teams gives admins control over profanity filtering

According to latest Teams feature update changelog, administrators can use a new meeting policy to control profanity filtering in live transcription and saved meeting transcripts.

Interestingly, filtering remains enabled by default. Organizations that prefer unfiltered transcripts can turn off the setting for the meeting policy assigned to an organizer.

When disabled, profane words that would normally appear masked can show up directly in live and saved transcripts. This could be particularly useful for organizations that need accurate records of conversations, including situations where exact wording matters. That being said, the new policy does not change individual participants’ existing profanity preferences for live captions.

The new Teams setting is rolling out across platforms

Microsoft lists the setting under Meeting settings, followed by Recording and transcription, in the applicable Teams meeting policy. The organizer’s assigned policy determines how profanity appears in the meeting transcript. Organizers and co-organizers cannot override this behavior individually for a particular meeting.

Do note that no action is required for organizations that want to retain the existing filtering behavior. However, administrators disabling it should consider their internal compliance requirements.

Moreover, it should be noted that saved transcripts could now contain language that was previously masked. Organizations may therefore need to update their internal guidance before changing the default setting.
