Microsoft Teams will begin automatically generating AI-powered .meeting archive files for eligible meetings in August 2026.

According to Message Center advisory MC1429018, Microsoft will enable the feature by default unless administrators manually disable it.

Teams Will Create AI Archives for Eligible Meetings

The new archive system will create structured files that help Microsoft’s AI tools retain context from previous meetings.

Microsoft says the archives will improve answers generated by Facilitator. Microsoft 365 Copilot will also gain access to the files in a future update.

Teams will not generate an archive for every meeting. A meeting must meet several eligibility requirements before the platform creates a .meeting file.

Requirements for Meeting Archive Creation

Teams will create an AI meeting archive only when:

  • The meeting transcript has been generated and saved.
  • At least one invited participant has a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
  • The “Allow Copilot and Facilitator” setting permits AI use during and after the meeting.

Microsoft could modify or expand these requirements in future updates.

What the .meeting File Contains

The archive will contain structured, AI-generated information about the meeting.

Microsoft says the file will not include raw excerpts copied directly from the meeting transcript. However, Teams will process the transcript and meeting metadata when creating the archive.

The resulting file will provide long-term meeting context that Microsoft’s AI assistants can use when answering questions about previous discussions.

Archives Will Use SharePoint Embedded Storage

Microsoft will store .meeting files inside a tenant-owned SharePoint Embedded container.

The archives will not consume storage from an individual participant’s account. They will remain under the organization’s control.

Users will not be able to directly open, rename, move, or edit the archive files. Teams and Microsoft’s AI services will manage them automatically.

Facilitator Will Use Previous Meeting Information

Facilitator will initially use the archives to answer questions about earlier meetings.

Answers may include citations that direct users to meeting recaps, invitations, or other related content.

Microsoft plans to add .meeting archive support to Microsoft 365 Copilot later. Once available, Copilot will use information from previous meetings when generating responses.

How to Disable Automatic AI Meeting Archives

Meeting organizers will receive a new “Meeting AI” toggle that disables Copilot, Facilitator, and related AI features for future meetings.

Administrators can also block automatic archive creation across the entire organization.

The policy is called:

Allow AI to archive meetings with .meeting file generation

Administrators can find it under:

Meeting Policies > AI Memory and Archive

Microsoft will enable the organization-wide policy by default. Administrators who do not want Teams to generate AI meeting archives must manually turn it off before the rollout begins.
