Microsoft has announced a new feature for its Teams platform: allowing users to edit their display names during meetings. This update, which enhances user experience and personalization, is now available for members of the Teams Public Preview or Microsoft 365 Targeted release.
With this new feature, meeting organizers can enable participants to change their display names by selecting “Meeting options” and allowing name edits.
According to the official blog post, participants can then hover over their names in the Participants pane, select “More options,” and choose “Edit display name.” This allows users to tailor their display names for specific meetings, whether for privacy, conciseness, or adding context such as job titles or nicknames.
Edited names will be marked with an “(Edited)” label to notify others of the change. However, these changes will only apply to the duration of the meeting and will not affect the original names on participants’ People cards. Permanent meeting artifacts like attendance reports and transcriptions will also retain the original names.
Organizations must enable this feature in the Teams admin center to access it, as it is turned off by default. Users must also use the new Teams client on Windows, Mac, or the web.
In other news, Microsoft Teams will also allow meetings’ organizers to choose the right time to share shared content with participants.
