Microsoft Warns Windows Insiders to Update Before August 11
The Windows Insider certificate deadline arrives on August 11, 2026, and affected users must update their devices before then. Microsoft says Insiders need a build containing the renewed flight certificate to continue receiving preview updates.
The requirement affects devices enrolled in the Experimental and Beta Channels. Release Preview Channel users do not need to install the renewed certificate.
Which Windows Insider channels are affected?
The certificate requirement covers Experimental Channel builds for Future Platforms, Windows 11 26H2, and Windows 11 26H1.
It also applies to Beta Channel builds for Windows 11 25H2 and Windows 11 26H1. Users must install a qualifying build before August 11 to avoid losing access to future Insider Preview releases.
Microsoft periodically renews its Windows Insider flight certificates. These certificates allow eligible preview devices to download and install new test builds through Windows Update.
Minimum Windows Insider builds required
Installing any available update may not meet the requirement. The installed build must match or exceed the minimum version for the selected channel.
- Experimental, Future Platforms: Build 29634.1000 or later
- Experimental, Windows 11 26H2: Build 26300.9032 or later
- Experimental, Windows 11 26H1: Build 28120.2630 or later
- Beta, Windows 11 25H2: Build 26220.9022 or later
- Beta, Windows 11 26H1: Build 28020.2623 or later
Microsoft included the renewed flight certificate in these builds and newer releases.
How to install the renewed certificate
Users can install the certificate by downloading the latest available Insider build through Windows Update.
Open Settings, select Windows Update, and check for updates. After installation, confirm that the build number meets the minimum requirement for the device’s channel.
Beta Channel users running Windows 11 25H2 can install Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.9022, which also introduces taskbar customization improvements and fixes update error 0xc1900101.
Experimental Channel users testing Windows 11 26H1 can install Build 28120.2630. That release reduces the number of monthly restarts and adds new touchpad controls.
Missing the deadline will not affect Windows activation
The August 11 deadline only affects access to future Windows Insider Preview updates. It does not deactivate Windows or change the device’s existing license.
A device that misses the deadline may remain on its current build but stop receiving newer Insider releases. Installing an eligible update before the certificate expires prevents that interruption.
