If Microsoft Word’s Transcribe feature is not working, you’re probably using the Word online version. The Transcribe feature is in preview on the desktop version. If you’re using the Word online, check your internet connection and try using a different browser.
How do I fix the Microsoft Word Transcribe feature?
1. Check your Microsoft 365 subscription
- Open Microsoft Word.
- Click on File > Account.
- Check if you have an active Microsoft 365 subscription.
- If not, consider subscribing to access Transcribe.
Transcribe in Word is available only for Microsoft 365 subscribers, so it will not be available if you’re using the free version. Also, you should use the Word online version if you’re trying it on the desktop version.
2. Verify your internet connection
Since Transcribe is a cloud-based feature, ensure you have a stable internet connection. Open your browser and check if you can access other websites.
Try restarting your router or switching to a different network if necessary.
3. Update your browser and clear its cache and cookies
If using Word Online, ensure your browser is up to date:
- Open your browser’s Settings.
- Look for the About or Update option.
- Install any available updates and restart the browser.
- Now, open your browser settings.
- Navigate to Privacy & Security > Clear Browsing Data.
- Select Cached images and files and Cookies and site data.
- Click Clear Data, then restart the browser.
4. Enable microphone permissions
- Open your browser settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security > Site Settings > Microphone.
- Ensure Word Online (office.com) has permission to use the microphone.
Transcribe requires microphone access, so you have to make sure that Word has permission to use it.
By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issue and get the Transcribe feature working again in Microsoft Word. Did you know that you can use Copilot to translate and transcribe?
