Microsoft's Canada Time Zone Changes Break Outlook, Teams, and Exchange Online
Microsoft is facing complaints from IT administrators after Canada’s new time zone changes caused problems with Outlook, Exchange Online, Teams, and other Microsoft services.
Several Canadian regions stopped observing Daylight Saving Time (DST) on November 1, 2026, forcing organizations to update their systems and applications. Microsoft has acknowledged multiple issues and is preparing fixes, including an Exchange Online PowerShell tool scheduled for November 4.
Canada’s new time zones create problems for Microsoft 365
Parts of British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, and Northwestern Ontario have stopped changing their clocks seasonally. These regions will now maintain fixed time offsets of UTC-07:00, UTC-06:00, or UTC-05:00, depending on their location.
Microsoft released Windows updates and guidance for the Canadian time zone changes, but administrators report difficulties applying the changes across their organizations.
Some also criticized Microsoft for releasing the necessary Windows updates only in mid-October, leaving little time to test and deploy them before November 1.
Outlook and Exchange Online calendars require manual fixes
One of the biggest problems affects existing Outlook calendar events, which do not automatically move to the new time zones.
Users must manually review and correct upcoming meetings, especially recurring events scheduled after November 1. Only meeting organizers can update existing invitations with attendees, creating additional work for organizations managing large numbers of meetings.
Administrators have also reported incorrect Outlook working hours, problems with free/busy calendar information, and inconsistent time zone configurations across Windows, Linux, and database systems.
Microsoft is developing an Exchange Online PowerShell cmdlet to help administrators correct non-recurring meetings. The company plans to release it on November 4, 2026.
A separate fix for recurring meetings remains under development, and Microsoft has not announced a release date.
Teams, SharePoint, and other Microsoft services also affected
The problems extend beyond Outlook and Exchange Online.
Microsoft Teams Rooms devices running Windows have displayed times one hour behind the Windows system clock. Microsoft has identified updates to Edge and WebView2 as necessary to address the issue.
Other affected services include Teams Auto Attendant, SharePoint On-Premises, Power Automate, Microsoft Fabric, and Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations.
For IT administrators, the changes have created additional work, particularly in organizations managing hundreds or thousands of devices.
Organizations must ensure their operating systems, applications, databases, and scheduling services use consistent time zone information to prevent further calendar and scheduling problems.
Microsoft continues to work on fixes and mitigations, although some issues still lack a confirmed resolution date.
In other Outlook news, the new Outlook is now generally available for GCC High and DoD. Microsoft is also bringing a unified inbox to the new Outlook and reviving Send Availability to simplify meeting scheduling.
