Modder turns the Asus ROG Ally X into a portable 3D scanning rig

A creative hardware combination is proving that modern gaming handhelds have enough raw processing power to handle demanding professional tasks. A recent demonstration posted online showed a user successfully transforming the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X into a fully mobile 3D scanning rig.

This completely self-contained setup allows users to securely capture and map entire indoor environments in real time without needing to carry a bulky laptop or a stationary tripod.

There’s a mix of hardware and software in the 3D scanning rig

The custom build relies on a few specific components working together. The creator mounted an Orbbec Gemini 336L depth sensor to the back of the Asus handheld and connected the two devices using a standard USB cable. Because the Asus system functions as a full Windows computer, it can run the desktop version of the Dot3D scanning software natively.

The onboard Ryzen Z1 series processor easily handles the incoming depth data visualization, mesh reconstruction, and file processing entirely on the fly. This means the operator can monitor the live scanning interface directly on the touch screen while walking down hallways and mapping small rooms.

There are some tradeoffs of a handheld scanner

While the demonstration video shows a fully navigable layout complete with pinch-to-zoom controls, this configuration does have some noticeable limitations. The generated 3D meshes occasionally display visual noise and incomplete structural details, particularly near room ceilings and sharp wall edges.

The setup also carries a steep financial requirement. The Orbbec camera alone costs around $379, and the required Dot3D professional scanning software typically charges an annual subscription fee of roughly $1,000, placing this well outside the budget of casual hobbyists.

Can be used for practical applications

Despite the minor visual artifacts and high software costs, the project highlights a highly practical alternative for real estate mapping and basic indoor construction planning. Using a portable gaming console is drastically lighter than hauling traditional professional scanning gear.

For professionals who already pay for the required mapping software, swapping a standard work laptop for this handheld could make their daily workflow much more mobile and physically comfortable.
