Mozilla has a service called Monitor Plus that notifies users if their data is exposed to third parties online.
However, it seems that one of the partners on this service was involved in data selling which resulted in a swift ending of collaboration with Mozilla.
Mozilla cuts ties with Onerep after conflict of interests
We wrote about Mozilla Monitor Plus not that long ago, and while the service itself is great, it seems that some of its partners have been involved in data selling.
As Ars Technica reports, Mozilla had to cut ties with one of its key providers, Onerep. This comes after reports that Onerep CEO was the founder of dozens of people-search services since 2010.
Among these services is the notorious Nuwber which is known for selling the type of information that Mozilla Monitor Plus is trying to prevent.
Onerep’s CEO stated that he had an ownership stake in Newber, however, the aforementioned service had no information sharing with Onerep. He also stated that he’s no longer involved in any people-sharing sites.
Vice president of communications at Mozilla in his statement said the following:
Customer data was never at risk, the outside financial interests and activities of Onerep’s CEO do not align with our values.
Currently, Mozilla is working on a transition plan, and the service will continue to operate without any disruptions for the time being.
