New accounting skills are coming to Excel and Cowork
We spotted that Microsoft has added the feature to its AI at Work roadmap under ID 578864. The rollout is scheduled to start sometime in this month. To remind you, the preview availability kicked off in October 2026.
In Microsoft’s wordings, the new accounting skills will help users handle several routine finance tasks. Accountants will be able to compare balances and transactions, identify discrepancies, and prepare reconciliation items for review.
Copilot can also draft different types of journal entries. These include accruals, reclassifications, allocations, reversals, and recurring entries. Microsoft says the system will check required inputs and balanced entries.
Reporting is another major part of this update. Copilot will analyze financial performance against plans and identify key drivers. It can then prepare reports explaining what changed and why.
Accountants are already putting Copilot through its paces
Microsoft noted that the early response has been encouraging. During seven days of limited Insider availability, more than 8,000 unique users invoked accounting skills. They used these features over 44,000 times across more than 18,000 Copilot conversations.
Additional features will cover audit, tax, financial planning, compliance, and training. Microsoft is also adding an optional audit trail across Excel and Cowork. When enabled, it records what Copilot changed and why. Do note that the audit trail is already available in Excel. Microsoft says it is coming soon to Cowork.
As for the availability, the new feature are planned for worldwide standard multi-tenant cloud environments across desktop, Mac, and web platforms.
