The Nintendo Switch 2 has reportedly received its first jailbreak, allowing users to run homebrew applications, modify games, and execute custom code without hardware modifications.

According to Wccftech, security developer Gezine discovered a software-only exploit that reportedly works on all current Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, including those running the latest firmware.

The developer also used AI tools, including OpenAI Codex, to help identify and exploit security vulnerabilities in Nintendo’s console.

Nintendo Switch 2 jailbreak works without hardware modifications

Unlike previous console exploits that required additional hardware, the new Nintendo Switch 2 jailbreak relies entirely on software.

The exploit reportedly allows users to run homebrew applications, execute custom code, modify games, back up saved games, and access most of the console’s peripherals.

However, the jailbreak is not permanent. Users must launch a specific original Nintendo Switch game every time they restart the console to reactivate the exploit.

OpenAI Codex helped crack Nintendo Switch 2 security

The developer reportedly exploited a 32-bit integer overflow vulnerability in an original Nintendo Switch game running through the Switch 2’s backward compatibility system.

By manipulating system permissions and software loading routines, the developer achieved native code execution on Nintendo’s latest console.

OpenAI Codex and other AI tools reportedly assisted with the vulnerability research and exploitation process, demonstrating how AI-powered coding tools can contribute to console security research.

Nintendo could block the jailbreak with a firmware update

The discovery could expand homebrew development and game modification possibilities on Nintendo Switch 2, although the exploit’s reliance on a specific game and repeated activation creates limitations.

Nintendo has not publicly responded to the reported jailbreak, and it remains unclear whether a future firmware update could block the exploit.

The development follows other console-related news, including reports that Nintendo’s revised European Switch 2 lacks the anticipated screen upgrade.

Meanwhile, the PSBox app recently brought Xbox Cloud Gaming to jailbroken PS5 consoles, although Sony has also taken action against PS5 jailbreak tools and distribution platforms.
