Nintendo Switch 2 Will See a Price Hike, Says a Former Exec
Nintendo’s recent decision to lower digital prices for first-party Switch 2 titles has sparked debate among players and gaming industry watchers alike. The company even had to jump in with a clarification to make people understand that physical editions aren’t becoming more expensive. It’s the digital edition that’s getting cheaper.
That messaging has reportedly been repeated by a former Nintendo sales lead, named “Sean,” on the latest Kit & Krysta Podcast (via Insider Gaming). Sean reportedly praised the strategy as a “consumer-first” approach, noting it makes digital gaming more accessible. Interestingly, he further added that hardware itself may not escape future cost pressures. In other words, it means Nintendo is highly likely to increase the price of Switch 2.
It’s not the first time we have heard about a Switch 2 price hike. Reports from late last year hinted that Nintendo is dealing with higher Switch 2 production costs. Meanwhile, a new report from earlier this year suggested that the ongoing memory crunch is the reason Nintendo Switch 2 will see a price hike later this year. Although there’s no official word just yet, all the rumors point to an increasing price.
Adding about the hike, Sean, in the podcast said, “Eventually the hardware price is going to have to go up.” He suggested that reducing software prices digitally could help mitigate the impact of any potential price increase for the Switch 2.
PS5 consoles are also getting a price hike starting this month
It’s not just Nintendo making headlines; Sony also recently confirmed price adjustments across multiple devices in the PlayStation lineup, including both consoles and accessories. The PS5 Slim Digital will cost $599.99 (+$100), while the PS5 Slim Disc is now $649.99 (+$100). The PS5 Pro is priced at $899.99 (+$100), and the PlayStation Portal will retail for $249.99 (+$30).
