Notepad++ Creator Warns of Fake macOS Version Misusing Brand Name
The site is fake, and is "not authorized, not endorsed, and not affiliated" with the project
Notepad++ has long been one of the go-to tools for developers and power users. Known for its lightweight design and fast performance, it works as a code editor and IDE-style tool for editing scripts, debugging code, and managing multiple files with ease.
Notepad++ is a staple for developers and power users due to its speed and lightweight footprint. It supports plugins, syntax highlighting, and multiple programming languages, which makes it popular among Windows users. That being said, the project has now run into an unexpected issue.
Fake Notepad++ macOS site called out by the original creator
A fake website is reportedly claiming to offer an official macOS version of Notepad++, something that does not actually exist. The site, which appears to mimic official branding, has been called out by creator Don Ho. He made it clear that the platform has never released a macOS version.
“Let me be blunt: This site has absolutely nothing to do with Notepad++. It’s not authorized, not endorsed, and not affiliated with the project in any way. The owner is using the Notepad++ trademark (the name) without permission; and even goes as far as placing my name and biography on the site to make it look legitimate.”
According to the statement, the website is using the Notepad++ name without permission. It even goes as far as adding Don Ho’s name and biography to appear legitimate. In a public note addressing “Trademark Violation” Ho has confirmed that he has contacted the website owner (via Neowin). But as of now, there has been no response.
In the meantime, Ho has also asked users to call out misinformation when they see it online by linking to the official announcement with a reply that reads, “This is not an official Notepad++ release. It’s an unauthorized project misusing the Notepad++ trademark.”
