Notion Shuts Down Notion Mail After Just Over a Year to Focus on AI Agents
Notion is shutting down Notion Mail on September 22, bringing an end to its AI-powered email client a little more than a year after its public launch. The company says it is shifting its strategy toward AI agents that manage email automatically instead of maintaining a standalone inbox.
Unlike traditional email services, Notion Mail worked as a smart interface for existing Gmail accounts rather than replacing them. Users could organize messages with AI-powered auto-labeling, schedule meetings, and customize how their inbox appeared.
According to Notion, user behavior has changed significantly since the product launched. The company says more than half of Notion Mail users now rely on Notion’s AI agents to handle email tasks without ever opening the inbox itself. That shift has convinced the company to invest in automation instead of maintaining a dedicated email application.
Users Have Until September 21 to Export Notion Mail Data
Although Gmail messages will remain untouched, users must export content that exists only inside Notion Mail before the service closes.
The export process became available on June 25 through the web interface and covers snippets, custom auto-label instructions, email drafts, and scheduled drafts.
The export window remains open until September 21. On September 22, Notion will permanently remove any remaining Notion Mail-only data, including unsaved local assets such as files attached to snippets.
Existing database synchronizations and mail blocks inside Notion workspaces will stay available after the shutdown. However, they will no longer receive new emails once the service is discontinued.
Regulated Organizations Face an Earlier Deadline
Notion is also warning organizations operating in regulated industries not to wait until September.
Companies using Notion Mail in HIPAA-covered environments should migrate away from the platform by June 30 to avoid compliance issues.
The company recommends transitioning workflows early to ensure uninterrupted compliance and to avoid relying on a product approaching the end of service.
In other email news, Google recently announced that unverified Gmail accounts will be limited to 5GB of storage. Microsoft is also adding Google account sign-in support to Microsoft Edge, making it easier for users to synchronize browsing data across services.
