Nvidia is reportedly working on a major shake-up of its high-end gaming GPU lineup, and the RTX 5090 might be the biggest casualty. A new claim from hardware leaker hongxing2020 on X suggests that the company is planning a 24GB RTX 5080, potentially replacing the existing 16GB model in early 2027. However, the rumored changes remain unconfirmed.

Nvidia could give the RTX 5080 a major memory upgrade

The rumor first highlighted by BenchLife and later picked up by VideoCardz suggests that Nvidia is preparing a GeForce RTX 5080 with 24GB of GDDR7 memory. The card could release in the first quarter of 2027, replacing the existing 16GB version instead of launching alongside it.

That would give the rumored model 50% more VRAM than the current RTX 5080. One possibility is that Nvidia could use higher-capacity 3GB GDDR7 memory modules to reach the increased capacity. However, the report does not confirm the final specifications, pricing, or product name.

Interestingly, board partners reportedly have not received the development documentation yet. They have only received verbal notifications about the upcoming materials. This means the reported launch window could still change.

RTX 5090 production could be heading toward an end

The RTX 5080 rumor comes as separate reports suggest Nvidia is redirecting its powerful GB202 GPU supply toward professional RTX PRO graphics cards. Hardware leaker MEGAsizeGPU previously claimed that new RTX 5090 production could stop, including its China-market variant.

That said, Nvidia has not officially announced the RTX 5080 24GB or confirmed the RTX 5090’s discontinuation. For now, both developments remain rumors, and buyers should wait for official details before making decisions.
