It has been flying under the radar, but currently, in the Microsoft Store, OneDrive is rated Teen on the ESRB code, which is usually reserved for video games only. Under this code, the Teen label means that OneDrive is suitable for ages 13 and over because it would include violence, suggestive themes, crude humour, minimal blood, frequent use of moderate language, and infrequent use of strong language if we are to trust Wikipedia’s definition.
However, OneDrive is not a video game and does not resemble one; it’s merely a platform where users can store their files and folders. Even then, you’d need to have an account to access it, so this rating is unusual, to say the least.
ESRB stands for Entertainment Software Rating Board and was established in 1994 to label controversial or even violent video games to suit the right audiences. Currently, there are seven ratings: Rating Pending, Rating Pending—Likely Mature 17+, Everyone, Everyone 10+, Teen, Mature 17+, and Adults Only 18+.
It’s uncommon for software products outside of video games to be rated with the ESRB label, and many users, including us, wonder why it is labelled this way.
Of course, on Reddit, the topic is prone to jokes, and rightfully so.
because it’s an fps game. you shoot your computer to death after getting angry at onedrive.
Sorry that’s my fault, I uploaded a curse word.
Some say the rating is there because you have to be 13+ to make a OneDrive account, but that still doesn’t make sense, as OneDrive doesn’t offer interactive entertainment tools other than being a regular storage app.
Is it indeed uncommon in the tech world? Who knows… maybe OneDrive has been a video game all along.
After all, the Redmond-based tech giant has been teasing huge changes coming to the storage platform. Or it might all well be a video game based on our patience to deal with the platform’s issues and bugs. Again, that question has no answer, but it’s good to know that OneDrive is labelled Teen on the ESRB code. At least it’s safe to use.
