OneDrive Storage Is Getting a New Pay-As-You-Go Billing Model

Microsoft is adding pay-as-you-go OneDrive storage billing for commercial customers, giving organizations another way to pay for storage once users exceed their licensed limits.

According to Message Center advisory MC1477185, Microsoft is rolling out a public preview of pay-as-you-go, or PAYG, storage billing for commercial OneDrive customers.

PAYG applies when a user exceeds the storage included with their existing license. Instead of buying a predefined storage package, organizations can pay for the additional storage that user consumes.

IT administrators must manually enable PAYG for selected users. Organizations that do not need the feature do not have to make any changes.

Existing OneDrive storage packs remain available

Microsoft will continue offering its existing additional storage packs, including 100GB, 500GB, and options ranging from 1TB to 6TB.

Whether an organization uses PAYG billing or storage packs, Microsoft limits each user’s total OneDrive allocation to 25TB.

Microsoft has published storage billing documentation explaining the available configurations.

PAYG billing reaches general availability in November

Microsoft plans to make the new billing option generally available in November 2026.

The company expects to complete the worldwide commercial rollout, including GCC, GCC High, and DoD environments, before the end of 2026.

The PAYG option does not appear to extend to personal OneDrive accounts.
