An SRT file is a popularly-used format for subtitles. The acronym SRT stands for SubRip Subtitle, named after the SubRip software used to create and edit these files.

A subtitle file that contains video subtitle information, such as the start and end of text timecodes and a sequential number of subtitles.

How can I open an SRT file on Windows?

1. Using the Notepad

  1. Press the Windows key, type notepad in the search box, and click Open.Notepad - open SRT file step 1

  3. Navigate to the SRT file and select it, then click Open.
  4. Select All files from the drop-down menu if you don’t see the file in the location. Once you see the file, select it and click Open.Select the file and click Open

2. Using the context menu

  1. Press Windows + E to open the File Explorer.
  2. Locate the SRT file and right-click it to open the context menu.Open from the context menu
  3. Select Open with and choose any available option.

3. Using Microsoft Word

  4. Select All files from the drop-down menu if you don’t see the file in the location. Once you see the file, select it and click Open.Open the file

You can also open the SRT files on the media players VLC media player, KMPlayer, MPlayer, and other text editors.
