OpenAI Adds 'Library' to ChatGPT for Easy File Access and Reuse

OpenAI has rolled out a new Library feature inside ChatGPT that gives users a dedicated space to store, find, and reuse files across conversations. Per the official documentation, first spotted by @bitbor91 on X, the feature is initially rolling out on the web. However, access is currently limited to users subscribed to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business plans.

ChatGPT Library ensures easy file access and reuse across conversations

The Library feature inside ChatGPT is available to users outside of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK. With Library, ChatGPT now automatically saves files you upload or create during chats. This includes documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs, and images, all stored in a secure location linked to your account. As a result, you can now access everything in one place, without losing track of files across conversations.

Do note that you can also add saved files directly into new chats by selecting them from the Library. This makes it easier to reuse content without re-uploading or searching through old threads. Generated images, however, will continue to appear in the separate Images tab.

The Library includes a search bar with filters, allowing you to quickly find files by type or whether they were uploaded or generated. File management is pretty straightforward, too. You can delete files anytime, with permanent removal scheduled within 30 days in most cases.

There are some limits to keep in mind. Files can be up to 512MB, while images are capped at 20MB. Spreadsheets and CSV files usually have smaller limits, while document uploads come with 2M token caps for processing.

In an official announcement on X, OpenAI has confirmed that the feature is only available for eligible users on the web. The company hasn’t announced wider availability for now. But we hope it’ll come to the mobile app as well. Speaking of company news, let’s not forget that OpenAI is reportedly also working on a unified desktop “super app” that combines ChatGPT, Atlas, and Codex into one platform.
