OpenAI Brings Seamless Shopping Experience Directly Into ChatGPT

OpenAI is pushing forward with ambitious plans to transform ChatGPT into a full-fledged “super app,” combining multiple tools while introducing native shopping capabilities directly inside the chat.

The company is working toward integrating ChatGPT with Atlas and Codex into a unified platform, aiming to centralize AI-powered productivity, development, and everyday tasks into a single experience.

At the same time, OpenAI has announced the rollout of in-chat shopping features, which are becoming available this week to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users.

The feature relies on a new system called the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which allows e-commerce platforms to plug their product catalogs directly into ChatGPT. Instead of offering generic recommendations, the AI can now surface real products that users can actually purchase.

With this update, users can search for products using natural language and receive tailored suggestions based on their needs. ChatGPT can present multiple options, compare pricing and features, and guide users through the decision-making process.

The biggest shift is that purchases can happen entirely within the chat interface. This removes the need to jump between websites, creating a more streamlined and conversational shopping flow.

The system also opens the door for broad retailer participation, although OpenAI has not confirmed any specific merchant partnerships so far.

Bigger vision meets growing tensions

While the shopping rollout highlights OpenAI’s push into consumer experiences, the company’s broader strategy may introduce friction with existing partners.

Reports suggest that OpenAI’s evolving business direction, including new infrastructure deals, has strained its relationship with Microsoft. In fact, Microsoft is reportedly considering legal action tied to OpenAI’s recent AWS agreement, signaling potential turbulence in one of the tech industry’s most important partnerships.

Despite that, OpenAI appears focused on building a unified AI ecosystem that blends productivity, coding, and commerce into a single destination.
