OpenAI Launches Astra for Law With GPT-6 and Legal Search

Astra for Law is OpenAI’s latest industry-specific AI product, following ChatGPT for Healthcare and ChatGPT for Financial Services. The new platform targets legal professionals with specialized research, analysis, and drafting capabilities.

OpenAI has announced Astra for Law, a legal AI offering built on its GPT-6 Astra model.

Astra for Law combines GPT-6 Astra with a dedicated legal search index and custom instructions designed specifically for legal analysis and writing.

OpenAI says lawyers can use the platform to research questions based on client facts, develop legal arguments and deal terms, identify weaknesses in cases, and assess how specific legal provisions could affect risk.

The system aims to give legal professionals access to both OpenAI’s reasoning models and a legal-specific information layer rather than relying only on general web knowledge.

Its legal search index covers more than 230 million URLs

Astra for Law can search U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions across more than 230 million URLs.

OpenAI says it adds new legal sources to the index every day.

The company has also partnered with the Free Law Project to incorporate CourtListener’s collection. According to OpenAI, the collection includes more than 99.9% of published U.S. precedential case law.

OpenAI is integrating Astra with existing legal software

OpenAI is also trying to bring Astra into tools that law firms already use instead of requiring firms to move their entire workflow into ChatGPT.

The company announced 26 partner-built plugins for legal platforms, with partners including iManage, Intapp, DeepJudge, Relativity, and Clio.

Thomson Reuters is bringing HighQ matter context into ChatGPT and is also previewing a CoCounsel Legal connector.

Another nine community plugins from LegalQuants, LECG, and Skills.law provide 47 customizable legal skills.

Astra for Law has a limited US rollout

Astra for Law is initially available in the United States to selected law firms through OpenAI’s Trusted Access program.

Participating firms can use Zero Data Retention with the API, while OpenAI says ChatGPT Enterprise usage is excluded from human review by default.

OpenAI is also working with Latham & Watkins on controls covering information permissions, ethical walls, client instructions, and firm oversight as firms introduce AI into sensitive legal workflows.

In other news, OpenAI revealed AI models tried to conceal errors and influence future instances.
