OpenAI Secures 100MW AI Data Center Deal With Tata in India at AI Impact Summit

OpenAI is accelerating its expansion in India through a major infrastructure partnership with the Tata Group, unveiled at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. The deal stands as one of the company’s most significant international moves as it works to localize AI infrastructure and drive deeper enterprise adoption across the country.

According to TechCrunch, OpenAI has secured 100 megawatts of AI-ready data center capacity in India, with long-term plans to scale that commitment to 1 gigawatt. The partnership falls under OpenAI’s Stargate project, which focuses on building global AI infrastructure to support advanced models and enterprise use.

Tata HyperVault becomes OpenAI’s first major customer

OpenAI will become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data center business. The initial 100MW allocation is substantial for AI workloads, which require dense GPU clusters and high power consumption to operate advanced models at scale.

If expanded to 1GW, the Tata facility would rank among the largest AI-focused data center deployments globally. Such capacity would allow OpenAI to run advanced models directly within India rather than relying solely on overseas infrastructure.

Local hosting strengthens compliance and enterprise adoption

India is one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing markets, with more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users across students, developers, teachers, and entrepreneurs. Hosting infrastructure locally enables faster response times while supporting data residency and regulatory compliance requirements.

Domestic AI hosting is especially important for regulated industries and enterprises that manage sensitive financial, healthcare, or government data. By building in-country capacity, OpenAI positions itself as a long-term infrastructure partner for large Indian organizations.

ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex to power Tata workforce

The collaboration extends beyond infrastructure. Tata Group plans to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across hundreds of thousands of employees, beginning with Tata Consultancy Services.

TCS will also standardize AI-native development practices using OpenAI tools such as Codex. The move aims to embed AI directly into engineering workflows and accelerate software development across Tata’s business ecosystem.

Certification programs and new offices in India

OpenAI will expand its certification programs in India, with TCS becoming the first participating organization outside the United States. The certifications are designed to build practical AI skills across industries and job roles.

The company also plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru, adding to its presence in New Delhi. The expansion supports enterprise partnerships, developer engagement, and closer regulatory coordination as India strengthens its role in the global AI race.

Broader push under “OpenAI for India”

The Tata partnership forms part of the broader “OpenAI for India” initiative. OpenAI has also expanded collaborations with companies such as Pine Labs, JioHotstar, Cars24, HCLTech, PhonePe, CRED, and MakeMyTrip.

Together, the infrastructure build-out, enterprise deployments, and ecosystem partnerships represent OpenAI’s largest coordinated effort yet to establish AI infrastructure and applications at scale in India. Financial details of the Tata agreement were not disclosed.

The expansion follows the recent release of GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark and comes as some longstanding partners, including Microsoft, increasingly pursue independent AI strategies. OpenAI’s India investment signals that global AI competition will increasingly depend on localized infrastructure, enterprise integration, and workforce enablement.
