OpenAI's Prism AI Workspace Wants to Fix Scientific Writing Once and for All

Much of our day-to-day life revolves around science, be it the medicines or systems that work behind the scenes to help us every day. Putting it simply, science touches almost every part of daily life. But despite how fast AI has moved in recent years, the way researchers actually write and collaborate on papers hasn’t changed much. That’s exactly what OpenAI is now trying to fix with a new AI-powered workspace, which it calls “Prism.”

Prism is designed to simplify how scientists and researchers write and collaborate

It is designed specifically for scientists and researchers and is free to use and available starting today for anyone with a personal ChatGPT account. The company says that support for Business, Enterprise, and Education users will follow soon. So, what’s soecial about Prism, you may ask, right?

Well, Prism brings research writing under one roof. At its core, Prism is a cloud-based, LaTeX-native writing space where drafting, editing, citations, equations, and collaboration all live in one place. Meaning, researchers can work inside a single project with everything connected. This cuts the hassle of jumping between document editors, reference managers, PDFs, and chat tools.

Notably, Prism is powered by GPT-5.2, which works directly within the document. That means it understands the structure of the paper, the equations, references, and even figures while helping with revisions or idea exploration. Researchers can draft sections, refine arguments, update citations, and rework equations, that too, without leaving the workspace.

The platform also supports real-time collaboration with unlimited collaborators. Teams can edit together, leave comments, and make changes instantly, without worrying about version conflicts or local LaTeX setups. There’s even support for turning handwritten equations or diagrams into LaTeX, along with optional voice-based editing for quick tweaks.

Prism builds on OpenAI’s earlier acquisition of Crixet, which turrns it into a more complete writing and collaboration tool tailored for scientific work. Do note that Prism is free with no project or collaborator limits, which lowers the barrier for students, independent researchers, and small teams. OpenAI says more advanced features will roll out later through paid ChatGPT plans.
