OpenClaw has been one of the most talked-about AI tools in recent weeks. No wonder it grabbed the eyeballs of many AI companies and users alike. Well, the big news here is that the OpenClaw creator, Peter Steinberger, has joined OpenAI.

OpenAI hires OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger to lead next-gen AI agents development

The decision comes at a time when OpenClaw has been trending across the AI industry for positioning itself as the “AI that actually does things,” promising real-world execution rather than simple text replies.

From managing calendars to booking flights and interacting with other AI agents, the project stood out in a crowded space increasingly focused on autonomous tools. Originally launched as Clawdbot, the project was renamed after Anthropic reportedly raised concerns over similarities to Claude. It later became Moltbot before finally settling on OpenClaw, a change Steinberger said simply felt right.

In a blog post announcing his decision, Steinberger said building a large standalone company around OpenClaw was not his end goal. “I did the whole creating-a-company game already, poured 13 years of my life into it, and learned a lot. What I want is to change the world, not build a large company, and teaming up with OpenAI is the fastest way to bring this to everyone,” Steinberger wrote.

Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also confirmed the hire on X, hinting that Steinberger will focus on the next generation of personal agents inside the company.

As for OpenClaw itself, Altman indicated that the project will move into a foundation and continue as an open source initiative, with OpenAI offering ongoing support.
