Microsoft is pushing Copilot deeper into Outlook web to make writing emails feel much more like having an AI editor sitting alongside you. The company is working on a new experience that will let Copilot draft, edit, refine, and format emails conversationally without users having to jump between different tools.

Outlook web is getting a more conversational Copilot for emails

We spotted a new feature entry in the official AI at Work Roadmap that suggests instead of asking Copilot to generate an email and then manually fixing everything, users will be able to work with it conversationally while composing a message. Microsoft says the experience is powered by the same agentic capabilities being introduced across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The feature is currently listed as in development, with rollout scheduled to start in November 2026. It is planned for the Outlook web experience and is listed for GCC, GCC High, and DoD cloud environments.

The new feature builds on Microsoft’s broader push to make Copilot part of the actual writing workflow. Earlier this year, Microsoft introduced an Outlook experience where Copilot could write directly in the email canvas, ask clarifying questions, and update the message as users respond. Users can also ask it to change the tone, make an email more concise, or reformat parts of the message.

Microsoft has also been moving Copilot closer to the Outlook composer. The company will start rolling out inline Copilot Chat inside the Outlook email composer this month, which allows users to interact with Copilot without opening the separate sidebar.

Moreover, Microsoft’s latest Outlook changes suggest the company isn’t simply adding another AI button. It is trying to make Copilot a more natural part of writing an email, from the first draft to the final formatting.
