this product key cannot be used in your countryregion

The ways of digital distribution are different but still quite similar to old days of physical copies. The pricing is never the same for every country around the globe, so there are region limitations. You can’t just buy Office 365 in India and activate it in Germany. That doesn’t work that way. That’s the reason why some users who tried it out had issues with the “This product key cannot be used in your country/region” error during the activation procedure.

On the other hand, there’s a way to overcome this. We don’t endorse this as it’s against Microsoft’s terms of usage. However, we can give you a hint or two below (wink, wink).

How to resolve the Office 365 activation problem when in a different country

How to activate your Office 365 from abroad

Firstly, let’s point towards the elephant in the room. You can’t activate Office 365 in a region different than the one you’ve purchased it for. Microsoft has worldwide sales regions and if you, say, bought the license in Asia, it can’t be activated in the US or Europe. And, if we’re to rely on the standard procedure, you’ll need to go back to the purchase region in order to use the Office 365 suite. This is obviously a general practice for all digital software proprietors or retailers. The pricing is not the same and even some features might differ.

However, don’t let that discourage you. There’s a way and it doesn’t include traveling back to the country where the purchase has been made. Although, we can’t say the procedure is perfectly legal, as it undermines the whole concept of different sales regions. What we’re referring to is a VPN. And how exactly to use a Virtual Private Network to your advantage?

Use VPN to mimic the IP address in order to activate Office 365

VPN services allow users to mask their real IP address and mimic the IP address from different countries and regions. And as your IP address is administered by the ISP, your geolocation is also easily distinguishable. Some folks advised changing Regions settings in your system, but that won’t suffice.

What you need to do is download and install a VPN tool. We strongly recommend paid solutions for the everyday use. However, for this particular task, you can use any given free VPN solution. Basically, it’s only a one-time use, so you can ditch it after the activation is completed. Of course, if the region in which you’ve purchased the license isn’t too scarce. Then some free-to-use solutions might not cut it.

With that in mind, we have a list of free VPN solutions, here. We suggest considering some subscription-based premium solutions if you deem VPN important for your daily usage. We have a list of those, as well. You can read about them, here.

Now, let’s show you how to use a VPN to activate the Office 365 license in no time. Follow the instructions below:

  1. First, download and install the VPN service client you’ve chosen.
  2. Run the tool and choose the region in which you’ve acquired the Office 365 license.
  3. Open Office 365 in a browser client and log in with your Microsoft Account credentials.
  4. Enter the license key and you should be good to go.
  5. Disable VPN and uninstall it if you want. It won’t be needed anymore.

That’s it. If you have a better idea on how to avoid the “This product key cannot be used in your country/region” error, make sure to tell us in the comments section below.
