Sony closed its latest State of Play with one of the most unexpected announcements of the showcase. Alongside a new John Wick game reveal, the company confirmed major plans for the God of War franchise.

Original God of War trilogy remake enters early development

According to the PlayStation Blog, Sony is marking the 20th anniversary of God of War, which first launched in March 2005 on the PlayStation 2. The franchise follows Kratos and his transformation from a Spartan general to the Ghost of Sparta, becoming one of PlayStation’s most iconic characters.

As part of the celebration, Sony officially confirmed that the original God of War trilogy is being remade.

The remake project remains in very early development. Sony did not share gameplay footage or a release window, but more details will arrive at a later date.

The announcement featured TC Carson, the original voice actor of Kratos during the Greek era. His appearance signaled a strong focus on honoring the series’ roots and longtime fans.

God of War: Sons of Sparta is revealed and out now

In addition to the remake, Sony revealed a brand-new spin-off titled God of War: Sons of Sparta, which is available now on PlayStation 5.

Sons of Sparta takes a different approach from the modern cinematic entries. It delivers a 2D action platformer experience set during Kratos’ youth, when he trained in the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos.

The story is written by members of Santa Monica Studio, the team behind God of War and God of War Ragnarök. The narrative centers on duty, honor, and brotherhood, expanding the Greek mythology timeline in a canon way.

TC Carson returns to voice the adult Kratos as the narrator, marking his first time reprising the role in over a decade.

Classic combat meets 2D gameplay

Sons of Sparta blends traditional God of War combat elements with 2D mechanics. Players use spear and shield combat, unlock divine artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus, and battle a wide range of enemies from Greek mythology.

The game features hand-drawn pixel animation and recreations of iconic enemies from the original trilogy. It also introduces new mythological creatures developed by Mega Cat Studios.

God of War: Sons of Sparta is available digitally on PS5. The Standard Edition costs $29.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition is priced at $39.99.

With a full trilogy remake on the way and a new spin-off already playable, Sony’s anniversary celebration positions God of War for another major era.

In other gaming news, Dying Light has surpassed 50 million players worldwide, and players are receiving a new Infected Outbreak event to celebrate the milestone.
