Sony Has Enough Memory Lined Up for PlayStation Sales Through March 2028
The global memory crunch has been putting pressure on console makers, with rising component costs and tighter supplies threatening hardware production. Sony has now offered a more reassuring update in its latest financial results. The company says it has aligned memory supplies with projected PlayStation hardware sales for the next fiscal year, while the widespread shortage remains a concern.
Sony says PlayStation memory supply is lined up for next fiscal year
Shedding light on the matter, CFO Lin Tao said the company has aligned with suppliers on the memory quantity needed for its projected hardware sales next fiscal year.
The company also addressed rising memory prices and their impact on PS5 profitability. Sony said it has offset higher costs through pricing and promotional adjustments, alongside additional cost reductions. It expects PS5 hardware profitability this fiscal year to remain on par with the previous year.
Sony didn’t reveal the exact memory volume or supplier agreements. However, its wording suggests it has made progress securing components for its next fiscal year. That period runs through March 31, 2028.
Regarding memory procurement for next fiscal year, based on discussions held so far with various suppliers, we have aligned on the quantity of memory needed for our projected hardware unit sales.
Sony’s gaming business delivers stronger financial results
The update comes as Sony’s Game and Network Services division reports stronger quarterly results. Sales reached 1.21 trillion yen, up 9% year over year. Operating income climbed 83% to 220.1 billion yen.
PlayStation also recorded 127 million monthly active accounts in September. That represents a 7% increase compared to the same month last year. Total playtime increased 4% during the quarter.
However, PS5 hardware sales are gradually declining as the console enters the latter part of its life cycle. Sony expects this trend to continue, while focusing on profitability rather than chasing hardware volume.
For now, the company hasn’t revealed how its memory arrangements could affect future console pricing or next-generation hardware plans.
