Sony Says 82% of PlayStation Game Sales Were Digital in Q1 FY2026

PlayStation digital game sales accounted for 82% of all full-game software purchases across PS4 and PS5 during Sony’s first quarter of fiscal year 2026.

The latest figures provide more context for Sony’s reported decision to stop producing physical PlayStation game discs starting in 2028.

PlayStation sales remain overwhelmingly digital

According to Sony’s FY2026 Q1 earnings announcement, digital downloads represented 82% of full-game software sales during the quarter.

Physical copies accounted for the remaining 18%, meaning fewer than one in five full-game purchases involved a disc.

The digital share declined slightly compared with the same quarter in the previous fiscal year, when downloads represented 83% of software sales. However, the one-percentage-point drop does not change the broader trend toward digital distribution.

Digital figures support Sony’s strategy

The strong digital sales ratio helps explain why Sony may prioritize downloads and reduce its reliance on physical media.

Digital distribution removes manufacturing, shipping, and retail costs while allowing Sony to sell games directly through the PlayStation Store. It also gives the company more control over pricing, promotions, and access to its software ecosystem.

Sony’s reported plan has still faced significant opposition. Fans launched the #PSBlackout campaign after reports emerged that the company could begin phasing out physical releases in 2028.

Despite the backlash, Sony reportedly remains committed to retiring physical game discs.

Strong digital adoption does not eliminate demand for discs

The earnings data shows that most PlayStation customers already purchase full games digitally. However, it does not prove that players want physical releases to disappear completely.

Physical games remain important for collectors, second-hand buyers, game preservation, lending, and customers with slow or limited internet connections. Disc ownership also gives players more control over how they store, share, and resell their purchases.

Digital sales may dominate PlayStation’s business, but physical copies still represent almost one-fifth of full-game software sales. Removing them entirely could therefore affect a smaller but still significant portion of the PlayStation audience.
